The State of the world\u2019s land and water resources for food and\u00a0agriculture\u00a0<\/span>(SOLAW 2021) by FAO\u00a0has\u00a0been recently released.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some key findings\u00a0of report<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0<\/span>Current patterns of agricultural intensification are not proving sustainable<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grassland and shrub-covered areas used to graze animals or as sources of fodder have\u00a0declined, due to\u00a0conversion\u00a0to cropland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The area of irrigated crops has doubled while that of rain fed crops has only increased by 2.6 per cent in the time period 2000-2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although cropland covers only 13 per cent of the global land cover classes, degraded cropland accounts for 29 per cent of all degraded areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Soil salinity is estimated to take up 1.5 million ha of cropland out of production each year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increase in use of chemical (non-organic) inputs; uptake of farm\u00a0mechanization; and overall impact of higher mono-cropping and grazing intensities are harming the agricultural land.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0<\/span>Population growth and\u00a0Urbanisation-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-Population increases have meant that agricultural land available per capita for crops and animal husbandry declined by 20 per cent between 2000 and 2017.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-The rapid growth of cities had a significant impact on land and water resources. More than 55 per cent of the world’s population are urban dwellers. This meant\u00a0<\/span>encroachment on good agricultural land<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-Due to increased population in the last two decades, there was a<\/span>\u00a0decline in global per capita internal renewable water resources (IRWR)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of about 20 per cent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-Internal renewable water resource (IRWR)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0that part of the water resources (surface water and groundwater) generated from\u00a0the\u00a0precipitation<\/span>\u00a0received by the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Progress made in reducing the number of undernourished people in the early part of the 21<\/span>st<\/span>\u00a0century has been reversed. The number has risen to 768 million in 2020 from 604 million in 2014.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By 2050, agriculture will need to produce almost 50 per cent more food, livestock fodder and biofuel than in 2012 to satisfy global demand and keep on track to achieve \u201czero hunger\u201d by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
