A chemical analysis of groundwater in several villages of Karnataka has found high levels of uranium concentration.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study was conducted by the scientists from the Divecha Centre for Climate Change, Indian Institute of Science and Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radioactivity, Mangalore University.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the study?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

– H<\/b><\/span>igh levels of uranium concentration <\/span><\/b>in groundwater of at least 57 villages out of 73. Concentration<\/span> ranges from <\/span>30 micrograms per litre (\u03bcg \/ l) <\/span><\/b>to even up to 60 \u03bcg \/ l. <\/span><\/b>In <\/span>some villages it even <\/span>goes up to 1000 \u03bcg \/ l.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

–<\/strong> None of the bore wells from which water has been sampled is anywhere in the vicinity of nuclear facilities or urban waste disposal channels.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Samples collected during January and February had much higher uranium content than those collected during July. Studies are underway to understand this change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why high uranium concentration is harmful?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Uranium has <\/span>no known essential biological functions<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>It is also a <\/span>toxic chemical.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exposure to high levels of uranium <\/span>can cause cancer, kidney disease.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be the probable reasons for such high level of uranium in groundwater of these areas<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/h5>\n

1) <\/strong>Rock composition of the area<\/span><\/b>– The chemical composition of water is <\/span>affected by Soil-water and rock-water interactions.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As per studies, Gneisses (a type of rock) and granitoids (category of rock) of Eastern Dharwar Craton have <\/span>high uranium concentration <\/span><\/b>as compared to those in Western Dharwar Craton.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cratons are a part of the crust which has attained stability and which has not been deformed for a long time.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

2) High degree of Oxidation<\/span><\/b>: T<\/span>he soils in the eastern part of Karnataka, being red loam with laterite at places, indicate a higher degree of oxidation during weathering. Oxidation of uranous to uranyl ion is promoted by such a weathering process. As uranyl phases are soluble in circulating groundwater, the process leads to a higher concentration of dissolved uranium in groundwater. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) <\/span>Depleting water table:<\/span><\/b> Evidence points towards depleting water table in many parts of eastern Karnataka. <\/span>Oxidative weathering in the deeper levels is facilitated<\/span><\/b> by this decline in groundwater level.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It also provides for an extended time of soil \/ rock-water interactions that lead to the release of more uranium to the circulating water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
