World Meteorological Organization<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>(WMO) has confirmed that Verkhoyansk<\/strong>, a Siberian town experienced the highest temperature of 38<\/span>o<\/span><\/sup>C, the highest ever recorded temperature in the Arctic region.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This place falls in eastern Siberia, which has an extremely harsh dry continental climate (very cold winter and hot summer).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On February 6th<\/sup> 2020, at the Esperanza station in Argentina considered to be a part of the Antarctic region, a temperature of 18.3\u00b0C was recorded. <\/span><\/p>\n

These events indicate that the region in and around both Arctic and Antarctic is being warmed gradually.

What is arctic circle?<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

All landmasses and seas north of 66.5\u00b0 latitude are considered the Arctic region. The latitude itself is called the Arctic Circle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the significance of this news?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It indicates the gradual warming of the Arctic region due to the climate change induced global warming.<\/p>\n

Further, it indicates how our climate\u2019s most extreme extremes are changing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Moreover, the impact of warming on the region is such that the WMO has added a new category \u2014 \u201chighest recorded temperature at or north of 66.5\u2070C, the Arctic Circle\u201d \u2014 to its international Archive of Weather and Climate Extremes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What are the causes?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

Global warming<\/span><\/b>– Arctic region\u00a0<\/span>is warming at twice the rate<\/span>\u00a0than the rest of the world, mainly because of human-made greenhouse gas emissions. The increased rate of warming is because of a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Arctic amplification is the process in which the\u00a0<\/span>melting ice<\/span>\u00a0hastens the process of warming by exposing areas that are not good at reflecting back heat into the atmosphere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This creates a cycle between melting ice and rising temperatures, amplifying the impact of warming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How the climate of Arctic region is changing?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

At the time the highest temperature was recorded, most of the Arctic region, especially Siberia, was experiencing an unprecedented heatwave,<\/strong> with temperatures in the Siberian Arctic rising up to 10\u00b0C above normal.<\/p>\n

This has lead to <\/span>forest fires and massive sea ice loss<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and was one of the reasons for 2020 becoming one of the three warmest years on record despite a cooling La Ni\u00f1a<\/a><\/strong><\/span> phenomenon towards the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n
