The reptiles were commonly sighted in the Beas River till the 1960s, but later became extinct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as part of the programme, 94 gharials have been released in the reserve since 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Why did Gharials go extinct in Beas River?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gharials may have gone extinct due to <strong>a)<\/strong> change in the hydrology due to construction of dams and barrages <strong>b)<\/strong> significantly reduced water flow <strong>c)<\/strong> rapid land-use change of floodplains and <strong>d)<\/strong> rampant overfishing led slowly into the extinction of the gharial from the Beas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the Beas Conservation Reserve?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beas Conservation Reserve is located in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjab.
