News: <\/span><\/b>Emissions from aviation industry <\/span>have almost\u00a0<\/span><\/b>doubled since 2000<\/span><\/b> and reached\u00a0<\/span>one billion ton<\/span><\/b> in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To reduce emissions from aviation sector and make it net-zero will require a <\/span>huge collaborative effort between industry, government and consumers.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What has been the efforts by the aviation sector towards the net-zero goal?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The aviation sector\u2019s progress in cutting emissions has been <\/span>very slow.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the <\/span>COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow<\/span><\/b>, the industry put forth a plan known as the\u00a0<\/span>Carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the drawback of the scheme is that it is based on carbon offsetting, which means even its implementation will not lead to absolute emission reduction from aviation sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It will only encourage another actor to reduce emissions on its behalf at lowest cost.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although on a positive note the scheme does encourage alternative cleaner fuels.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why governments have failed to lower emissions from aviation sector?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

1) Pollution from aviation is <\/span>not counted in the emissions of any country<\/span><\/b>, leaving little incentive for governments to act. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a02) Aviation involves <\/span>multiple stakeholders<\/span><\/b> which makes introducing changes difficult.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

1) <\/span>Enhance<\/span><\/b> production and deployment of new aviation fuels and technologies<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Jet fuel can be replaced with <\/span>alternatives such as sustainable fuels or electric or hydrogen propulsion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) <\/span>Update regulatory and certification processes for new types of aircraft<\/span><\/b>– Electric and hybrid aircraft have been a latest development in this regard but are yet to become a commercially viable option.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are powered by hydrogen or a battery\/ any sustainable fuel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They not only reduce carbon emissions but also reduce non-CO\u2082 climate impacts such as oxides of nitrogen (NOx), soot particles, oxidized Sulphur species, and water vapour. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They also have lower maintenance\u00a0costs. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) <\/span>Fuel demand can be reduced through efficiencies in route and air traffic management.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) <\/span>Greener airport and infrastructure <\/span><\/b>will significantly help lower emissions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5) Experts like <\/span>Pilots and aerospace engineers can be consulted<\/span><\/b> while designing policies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
