{"id":15538,"date":"2020-05-19T20:16:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T14:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/factly.forumias.com\/?p=15538"},"modified":"2020-05-19T20:16:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T14:46:03","slug":"rare-palm-from-andamans-gets-second-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rare-palm-from-andamans-gets-second-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare palm from Andamans gets second home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong>Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI) has given Pinanga andamanensis its second home at Palode,Kerala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pinanga andamanensis:<\/strong> It is one of the critically endangered endemic palm species from the South Andaman Islands.<\/li><li>It\u2019s name is derived from \u2018Penang\u2019, the modern-day Malaysian state and it resembles the Areca Palm.<\/li><li>It was originally described by the Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari in 1934 based on an old herbarium specimen collected by E.H. Man,an assistant superintendent in the Andaman administration.<\/li><li>Its entire population of some 600 specimens naturally occurs only in a tiny, evergreen forest pocket in South Andaman\u2019s Mount Harriet National Park.<\/li><li><strong>Uses:<\/strong> Its use are yet to be understood fully.But this palm holds promise as an avenue tree for gardens, pavements and homesteads.<\/li><li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> Natural calamities such as cyclones, earthquakes and rampaging by wild elephants among others.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News:Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (JNTBGRI) has given Pinanga andamanensis its second home at Palode,Kerala.
