{"id":155448,"date":"2021-12-22T19:24:33","date_gmt":"2021-12-22T13:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=155448"},"modified":"2021-12-22T19:24:33","modified_gmt":"2021-12-22T13:54:33","slug":"labour-losses-due-to-rising-heat-india-among-the-most-affected-finds-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/labour-losses-due-to-rising-heat-india-among-the-most-affected-finds-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour losses due to rising heat: India among the most affected, finds study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5>What is the news?<\/h5>\n<p>Rising heat and humidity due to global warming has prompted major loss in labour hours across the globe. <strong>India<\/strong> is one of the <strong>worst affected countries,<\/strong> according to a new study led by Duke University researchers.<\/p>\n<p>This is the <strong>first study at the global scale<\/strong> assessing how effective it is to move heavy work to the cooler parts of the day as an adaptation to climate change.<\/p>\n<h5>What are the key findings of the report?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> As heat and humidity levels rise because of climate change, options for moving outdoor labour to cooler hours will dramatically shrink, leading to significant <strong>worldwide labour losses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The economic losses associated with this lost productivity could reach up to <strong>$1.6 trillion (Rs 1.6 lakh crores) annually<\/strong> if warming exceeds an additional 2<sup>o<\/sup>C relative to the present.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em>An increase in heat stress resulting from global warming is projected to lead to global productivity losses equivalent to 80 million full-time jobs 2030, according to International Labour Organization (ILO).<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Labour losses from heat exposure are <strong>spatially variable<\/strong>, with several countries in southwest Asia, South Asia and Africa that already experience per-capita, 12-hour workday labour losses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> <strong>India, China, Pakistan and Indonesia<\/strong> \u2014 where larger fractions of the population work outdoors \u2014 will experience the biggest losses overall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Critical jobs, such as agricultural work and construction work, will become <strong>almost impossible to perform safely<\/strong> during afternoon hours in the summer in many places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> If we limit warming to within another degree of current levels, <strong>we can still avoid most worker productivity losses<\/strong> by moving heavy labour to the early morning hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>Labour losses due to rising heat: India among the most affected, finds study<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>The Down to Earth<\/strong> on <strong>21<sup>st<\/sup> Dec 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
