Among<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> neutron stars\u00a0<\/strong><em>(neutron stars are the remnants of giant stars that died in a fiery explosion known as a supernova. They have a mass of about 1.4 times that of the sun) <\/em>stands out a small group with the most intense magnetic field. These are known as magnetars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnetars <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience <strong>violent eruptions<\/strong> or <strong>intense bursts<\/strong> in the form of transient X-ray pulses which are several orders higher than that of the Sun. Even inactive magnetars can be thousands of times more luminous than the Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, only 30 magnetars located within the Milky Way have been discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the study undertaken by Astronomers?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Background<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a massive giant eruption that occurred in 2020 from a magnetar named <strong>GRB2001415<\/strong>. This eruption released energy equivalent to what the Sun would radiate in one lakh years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eruption was detected by the <strong>Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM)<\/strong> on board the International Space Station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Astronomers studied why this eruption took place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What did they find out?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like earthquakes on Earth, magnetars suffer starquakes produced on their crust due to high instability prevailing in their magnetospheres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This instability triggers <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nasas-parker-solar-probe-enters-the-suns-atmosphere-for-the-first-time\/\">Alfven waves <\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that are also common in the Sun.
