News<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>US President Biden recently conducted a Summit for democracy<\/a><\/strong><\/span> which focused on the question that how any threat to democracy can pose an existential crisis for the human civilization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why it is important to protect democratic norms and institutions?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Civilizations depend on twin pillars of <\/span>norms and conventions<\/span><\/b>. If one of the pillars becomes weak, a civilization will collapse. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As has been seen across history, <\/span>Culture and institutions<\/span><\/b> have a huge influence on economy.\u00a0<\/span>Humans mostly learn though <\/span>social learning<\/span><\/b> which in turn shape norms (socially acceptable rules)<\/em> which then sustain society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since the pandemic, several such factors have emerged which have amplified the threat to democratic institutions. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example<\/strong>: Strain due to rapid advance of digital technology, increased outsourcing leading to hyper-nationalism which is in turn is fuelling the rise of anti-democratic leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be done to sustain and protect democracy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Pro social preferences<\/span><\/b> can be instilled through <\/span>education<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> We can do this through education, and by deliberating and deciding as citizens to promote certain kinds of collective behaviour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategy drawn from <\/span>game theory<\/span><\/b> involving a global guarantee of human rights can also work against authoritarian regimes<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Game theory is the science of strategy. It attempts to determine mathematically and logically the actions that \u201cplayers\u201d should take to secure the best outcomes for themselves in a wide array of \u201cgames.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The outcome for each participant depends on the choices (strategies) of all. It works on zero-sum games and the interests of the players conflict totally, so that one person\u2019s gain always is another\u2019s loss<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

There is need for a <\/span>minimal global constitution<\/span><\/b> that provides a set of guarantees, like basic human rights and press freedom, and authorizes countries to intervene when a government violates them. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drafting such a universal constitution cannot be left to any particular country, because it will invariably focus on self-interest first.\u00a0 Hence, an autonomous group<\/strong> to draft a strategy and then an autonomous multilateral authority<\/strong> needs to be created to help achieve it.<\/span>
