Why are farmers all over the world transitioning\u00a0from livestock to plant based production?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Demand for plant-based products is growing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farmer specific issues<\/span><\/b>-Animal farming usually has exploitative contracts, with poor working conditions, low income, high vulnerability to market forces and extreme stress.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Industrialised livestock production<\/strong> is a dangerous business<\/strong> that posesAll Categories<\/a> a serious threat to human health and psychological well-being. <\/span>For instance<\/strong>, new strains of bird and swine flu,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0which have the potential to become zoonotic diseases, emerge each year posing a major threat to human health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the workers at these plants were from racialised comm<\/span>unities and already face multiple socio-economic challenges<\/strong> that were exacerbated by the spread of the virus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Environmental concerns-<\/span><\/b>The livestock sector is projected to account for up to 81% of the 1.5o<\/sup>C emissions budget by 2050 if production continues unabated. <\/span>To remain within environmental limits and planetary boundaries,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>researchers have shown\u00a0that the global production of animal-sourced foods must be reduced by at least half.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the advantages of this a just livestock transition?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), transitioning to environmentally and socially sustainable economies can drive job creation, create better jobs, increase social justice<\/strong> and reduce poverty.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/h5>\n

Farmers should be guided<\/strong> to identify new market opportunities for plant-based operations and access guidance on making the transition away from livestock production financially viable.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These measures should also be complemented by policies aimed at increasing plant-based food consumption<\/strong> to prevent emissions leakage and to enable an overall transition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
