These companies have been accused of <\/span>delaying refunds, suppressing information<\/span><\/b> about auto-debit facilities and luring subscribers to sign up for tuitions without explaining the financial implications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the need for such an advisory?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Sector has seen <\/span>very high growth<\/span><\/b>, specially with the closure of schools during the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>K-12 (kindergarten to class 12<\/span><\/b>) segment operates <\/span>largely unregulated<\/span><\/b> and has seen the most unfettered growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China<\/span><\/b> has put a lot <\/span>of restrictions on the Edtech companies<\/span><\/b>, one of which is that they can\u2019t raise foreign capital. This has <\/span>redirected investor interest<\/span><\/b> towards India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Example<\/strong>: Sector attracted $4 billion in funding since 2020 compared with around $500 million in 2019.<\/span> Moreover, India now boasts five edtech unicorns<\/strong> against just one in the pre-pandemic era.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges in regulating Edtech sector?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Edtech has a wide presence and has been <\/span>growing exponentially<\/span><\/b> which makes <\/span>regulating<\/span><\/b> it a <\/span>complex task.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>business model<\/span><\/b> in Edtech sector is more conducive to <\/span>delivering revenues<\/span><\/b> rather than quality education, with <\/span>investors typically seeking an exit in five years<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Government should plan for <\/span>standards-setting and certification process<\/span><\/b> for online schooling <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Need for introducing <\/span>long lock-in<\/span><\/b> for investors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is need for a more extensive <\/span>campaign that spreads awareness<\/span><\/b> regarding this advisory to more and more people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This will save many parents in lower-income families from financial ruin.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Govt should introduce p<\/strong><\/span>ublic distance learning education modules<\/span><\/b>, as this will increase access to education specially for the disadvantaged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
