Gender-sorting of jobs<\/span><\/b>: A <\/span>International Labour Organization<\/span><\/b> study states that <\/span>gender sorting of jobs<\/span><\/b> by educational streaming, stereotypes and biased expectations often relegates women to less-productive enterprises and lower-paid jobs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Low self-esteem<\/span><\/b>– Even if women have the skills and talent to succeed in the STEM fields, they shy away from such a career, because of weak self-confidence and poor self-belief.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Role of the educational and domestic environment<\/span><\/b> have a huge role in shaping a student\u2019s professional interests. For example-male preference for the masculinised and realistic occupations and females \u201cchoosing the social and artistic occupations such as teachers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discrimination and harassment<\/span><\/b>-Women are treated differently at every level and remain vulnerable to sexual harassment<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some examples that things are changing in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Increase in enrolment: <\/span><\/b>India now has more female graduates (43% of all) in STEM subjects than the developed nations like US (34%), UK (38%), etc<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, Supreme court in 2020 ruled in <\/span>favour of women holding commanding roles in the armed forces<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Economic development and women\u2019s empowerment are correlated, are too weakly connected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, <\/span>growth doesn\u2019t guarantee gender equality,<\/span><\/b> so efforts need to be made to liberate the upbringing and learning process<\/span> so that young minds are free from the outdated prejudices and stereotypes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
