News<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>After 2020 amendment to the FCRA act 2010, NGOs are required to renew their FCRA (Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act) license in order to be able to receive foreign funding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ministry of home affairs (MHA), which looks into these renewals recently denied Missionaries of Charity group<\/a><\/strong><\/span> (an NGO founded by Mother Teresa)<\/em> renewal of its FCRA license.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has also not yet scrutinised more than four-fifths of the applications of the 22,000-plus NGOs that have sought renewal of their FCRA license.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the issues associated with this present situation?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

If government does not extend deadline by midnight ,all NGOs whose application is yet to be scrutinised stand to <\/span>lose their ability to access international funding<\/span><\/b> in the coming year<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NGOs have to prove that their work does not qualify <\/span>as harmful to \u201cpublic interest\u201d or \u201cnational security<\/span><\/b>\u201d. The 2020 amendment of FCRA act of 2010 has left these terms undefined and ambiguous<\/strong>. This may lead to subjective interpretations<\/strong> on the part of MHA officials. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many <\/span>prominent NGOs<\/span><\/b> like Amnesty International, Greenpeace India, etc. have <\/span>lost<\/span><\/b> their FCRA licenses in the past few years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of these NGOs work in <\/span>very critical fields and most often where state helps fails to reach, like<\/span><\/b> pollution and climate change issues, human rights, child labour and human slavery. They, therefore, have a strong<\/span> impact<\/strong><\/span> on the progress of the nation and welfare of the poor.<\/span><\/b>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Political parties<\/span><\/b> are <\/span>able to access foreign funds<\/span><\/b> for their campaigns <\/span>under FCRA<\/span><\/b> while NGOs<\/span> are denied the same.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
