News: <\/span><\/b>It has been approximately one year since the introduction of vaccines.<\/span> Despite many achievements there are still numerous challenges to be tackled like vaccine hesitancy and shortage in supplies<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this light, calls are being made to make vaccination mandatory.<\/p>\n

We need to understand that in public health, the education and service approach works much more<\/strong> than the legal approach. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, legal measures could be used appropriately \u2014 by restricting entry, incentives or disincentives \u2014 to convince people to get vaccinated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been the positives in the Indian vaccination program?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

There is <\/span>reasonable vaccination coverage<\/span><\/b> across the country<\/span> and many issues in vaccine supplies and logistics have been rectified now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Transparency in reporting adverse events: <\/span><\/b>Reporting of adverse events is systematically done at the primary, sub-centre, block and district levels. There are various committees that include specialists who go through the reports.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges that still remain?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Vaccine coverage<\/strong>: Although many eligible people are getting vaccinated. But <\/span>the last mile reach<\/span><\/b> has become a challenge, particularly among,<\/span> the 50-plus population who have either received the first dose but are reluctant to get their second dose or have not received even their first dose yet. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Many countries are moving towards booster doses, but we have not completed vaccination of all the eligible persons with even the first dose<\/strong> of the vaccine. <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Almost 23% of healthcare and frontline workers are yet to get their second dose in India. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rumours being spread against vaccines: <\/span><\/b>Anti-vaxxers are actively spreading a lot of rumours, pseudoscience and unscientific information. Rumours are spread on social media and through WhatsApp.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although vaccines have reached the remotest corners but there is challenge is to reach the <\/span>population reluctant to get vaccinated.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Reach out<\/strong> to people who are still reluctant to get vaccinated and educate<\/strong> them about the importance of getting vaccinated.<\/span> Involve doctors, community influencers such as religious leaders, political leaders, panchayat leaders and other influential groups, frontline and healthcare workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Govt can promote awareness<\/strong> through using example of previous successful vaccination campaigns. Example –<\/strong> How vaccination has eradicated smallpox and Polio is on verge of eradication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Governments can focus on particular population subgroups<\/strong> where vaccination is low and take targeted efforts<\/strong> to create awareness<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Incentives for people<\/strong> who get vaccinated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rumour-mongering groups and anti-vaccine lobbies must be dealt seriously<\/strong>, and legal action should be taken against them.<\/span> Governments can come up with advertisements on television or newspapers. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Children should be vaccinated,<\/strong> while booster doses should be administered to the eligible population. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Developed countries should understand the problems faced by developing and low-economic countries. The huge vaccine inequity present in the world should be resolved.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some cities have already achieved 100% coverage (first dose)<\/em>. There is need to study such models.<\/strong> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it possible to make vaccination mandatory?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Although some states have made vaccination mandatory for entry into public places and workplaces while the Central Govt has maintained that vaccination is voluntary. <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Govt<\/strong> can introduce mandatory vaccination<\/strong> by giving more importance to the community health vis a vis Individual\u2019s right for denying vaccination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For Example <\/strong>– Smallpox was eradicated by making vaccination compulsory from 1965 to 1975. <\/span><\/p>\n

Local health authorities have the power to make vaccination mandatory<\/strong> as COVID has been declared a notifiable disease under different Acts of the States or the Epidemic Diseases Act. If anyone seeks exemption, they will have to approach the Judicial Magistrate. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
