{"id":158012,"date":"2022-01-03T20:50:25","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T15:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=158012"},"modified":"2022-01-03T20:50:25","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T15:20:25","slug":"carbon-rich-stars-steal-heavy-elements-from-their-low-mass-companions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/carbon-rich-stars-steal-heavy-elements-from-their-low-mass-companions\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon-rich stars steal heavy elements from their low mass companions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the news?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team of Indian scientists has achieved significant advancement in revealing the mystery behind the presence of a much higher fraction of elements heavier than iron in Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) Stars?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEMP Stars are primarily <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characterized by <strong>diverse heavy elements<\/strong> and <strong>abundance patterns<\/strong>.They were formed from the <strong>ejected material of the first stars<\/strong> that formed after the Big Bang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These stars are primarily classified into four groups, based on which groups of heavy elements are more abundant. These are mostly <strong>dwarf stars, subgiant stars<\/strong> or <strong>giant stars<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the evolutionary stages, these Stars cannot produce elements heavier than iron. However, the surface chemical composition of these stars exhibit abundances of heavy elements which are about 100 to 1000 times higher than that of the Sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the study conducted by Indian Scientists?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study was conducted to understand the presence of these much higher fraction of elements heavier than iron in carbon-rich stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team analyzed the stars using <strong>Himalayan Chandra Telescope<\/strong> (HCT) at Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle and <strong>SUBARU Telescope<\/strong> at the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Findings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The team have traced the presence of heavier elements to the origin of the low mass companions of these stars from which the materials have been stolen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of this study?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Probing into the formation of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) Stars <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can help trace the origin and evolution of the elements in the Universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u2018<\/b><b>Carbon-rich stars steal heavy elements from their low mass companions<\/b><b>\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in<\/span><b> PIB <\/b>on<b> 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Jan 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
