{"id":158102,"date":"2022-01-03T20:56:14","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T15:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=158102"},"modified":"2022-01-03T20:56:14","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T15:26:14","slug":"explained-chinas-border-law-and-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-chinas-border-law-and-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: China\u2019s border law and India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is the news?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><strong>China\u2019s new law on land borders<\/strong>, passed on October 23, has come into effect from 1st Jan 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This has happened at a time when,<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The border standoff in eastern Ladakh remains unresolved<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> China has renamed several places in Arunachal Pradesh as part of its claim on the Indian state, and<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The Chinese Embassy in Delhi has written to Indian MPs, including a minister, who had attended a dinner reception hosted by the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Must Read<\/strong>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/chinas-border-law-the-why-what-what-next\/\">China&#8217;s border law: The Why, what &amp; what next<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h5>What is the new law?<\/h5>\n<p>The Standing Committee of China\u2019s National People\u2019s Congress passed the law for the <strong>protection and exploitation<\/strong> of the country\u2019s land border areas.<\/p>\n<p>It is <strong>encouraging the development of villages for civilians in the border areas <\/strong>by mandating\u00a0the state to take measures to<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> strengthen border defence<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> support economic and social development<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> improve public services and infrastructure in such areas<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> encourage and support people\u2019s life and work there<\/p>\n<p>It asks the state to <strong>resolve land border related-affairs with neighbouring countries through negotiations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The law lays conditions under which the state can <strong>impose emergency measures<\/strong>, including border shutdown.<\/p>\n<h5>Why this law has been brought?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> It reflects <strong>Beijing\u2019s renewed concerns<\/strong> over the security of its land border while it confronts a range of unsettled disputes on its maritime front.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> The Covid-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for Beijing to exert greater control over its somewhat porous land border.<\/p>\n<h5>What are its implications for India?<\/h5>\n<p>Although the law is not meant specifically for India, it is bound to have some impact.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em>China and India share a disputed 3,488-km boundary, the third longest among China\u2019s 22,457-km land boundaries with 14 countries. Besides India, Bhutan (477 km) is the only other country with which China has a disputed land border.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>India-China relations<\/strong>: Beijing appears to be signaling determination to resolve the border disputes on its preferred terms.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts feel the new law will <strong>make China stick to its position<\/strong>, in the ongoing standoff as well as in the resolution of the larger boundary issue.
