News<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Recently there have been various instances where many political representatives and public figures have presented ideas and boasted facts that are nothing but pseudoscience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what is even more surprising is the lack of opposition from the leading scientists of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are these instances? <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Many speakers at the <\/span>102nd<\/sup> Indian Science Congress<\/span><\/b> which was held in 2015 proposed unscientific facts. <\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> They argued that ancient \u2018Bharat\u2019 was a repository of all modern knowledge<\/strong>, some of which is yet to be invented in this century.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Recently, a prominent public figure said that DNA of all the people in India has been the same for 40,000 years<\/strong>. His message clearly goes against the proven fact that Indians have mixed genetic lineages originating from Africa, the Mediterranean, and Eurasian steppes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– IIT Kharagpur <\/span><\/b>has now issued a 2022 calendar<\/span><\/b>. The purpose of it is to argue for a <\/span>Vedic cultural foundation for the Indus Valley Civilisation<\/span><\/b> \u2014 a theory that goes against all the available evidence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the implications of such incidents on the society? <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

–<\/strong> They encourage <\/span>intolerance and superstition. <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Endangers Freedom of thought: <\/span><\/b>For the creation of knowledge, all stakeholders should be able to think and express themselves freely. One also needs to have a space for dissent, which is a fundamental requirement for democracies to thrive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Pseudoscience provides a foundational base for a huge money-making industry that successfully <\/span>help sustain quackery by exploiting the people\u2019s ignorance<\/span><\/b>.<\/span> Example<\/strong>: Cow products to cure COVID-19.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the reasons for the lack of any opposition?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

–<\/strong> Scientific research relies almost <\/span>entirely on funding from the government<\/span><\/b>, this makes dissent difficult.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Contemporary science researchers remain entirely <\/span>cut off from liberal intellectual discourse<\/span><\/b>, unlike in the initial years after Independence. <\/span> In the early 20th<\/sup> century<\/b>, many leading scientists were deeply engaged with philosophy<\/b> and always thought that how science will affect society<\/b>. They were much more proactive about societal issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Globally, STEM (<\/strong>science, technology, engineering and mathematics<\/b><\/span><\/span>)<\/strong><\/em> students demonstrate <\/span>less social concern<\/span><\/b> than students from other streams. The is because of the pedagogy followed in our science education system. For many of them, <\/span>exposure to the social sciences is minimal at university<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> We are also living at a time when <\/span>scientific advice is marginalised in public policy debates<\/span><\/b> ranging from natural resource use to environmental impacts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/h5>\n

Science education must include pedagogical inputs that help learners take a stand against false theories that could undermine <\/span>progress of society and democratic structures.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
