The British government was entrusted with appointing senior priests at the temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The powers of management of the temple were passed on to the <strong>King of Khordha<\/strong> after three years, while the colonial government continued to retain some control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After India gained Independence, the <strong>Jagannath Temple Act was introduced in the year 1952<\/strong>, which came into effect in 1954.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Act contains provision regarding <strong>a)<\/strong> land rights of the temple,<strong> b)<\/strong> duties of the sevayat (priests), <strong>c)<\/strong> administrative powers of the Shri Jagannath Temple Managing Committee, <strong>d)<\/strong> rights and privileges of the Raja of Puri and other persons connected with the management and administration of the temple.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the recent amendments to the Sri Jagannath Temple Act of 1954?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amendment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <strong>delegated power to temple administration and concerned officials<\/strong> for sale and lease of land in name of Jagannath temple. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike earlier,<strong> no approval will be required<\/strong> from the state government for this process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, through the sale of land, used and unused, the temple can also generate additional corpus funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the article<\/span><b> \u2018Explained: Amendment to the Jagannath Temple Act<\/b><b>\u2019<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>Indian Express <\/b>on <b>6th Jan 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
