News: Forest Survey of India<\/span><\/b> has found that more than <\/span>30 hills <\/span><\/b>in the Rajasthan segment of <\/span>Aravalli<\/span><\/b> range have vanished<\/span><\/b> due to the flattening of land by the mining mafia. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent<\/span> years, Aravalli has seen <\/span>a lot of destruction<\/span><\/b> and this is impacting not just the area around it but also the surrounding areas up to NCR.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a desertification-related study undertaken by the Central University of Rajasthan this <\/span>menace is only going to exacerbate due to climate change.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About Aravalli<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

It has characteristically <\/span>served as the green wall<\/span><\/b>, or a natural fence, <\/span>between the desert and adjoining fertile plains.<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is causing degradation of Aravalli?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

–<\/strong> Increasing <\/span>population pressure<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Changes in <\/span>rainfall pattern<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span><\/b>Spreading of sand dunes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/span><\/b>Flawed plantation drives<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Unchecked quarrying <\/span><\/b>and illegal felling <\/span><\/b>of trees \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Clearing of land<\/span><\/b> for the construction of farm houses and residential colonies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Over-exploitation of resources<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>reckless urbanisation<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the implications of this damage?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Compromised capacity of the Aravalli to control the <\/span>spread of the desert<\/span><\/b>. Due to this, desert would spread towards the east, causing aridity in the fertile plains<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Thinning of the vegetative cover<\/strong> creates large openings for the sand-loaded winds to cross over to Delhi and nearby areas, <\/span>aggravating urban pollution <\/span><\/b>in the region.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Dusty winds from the desert are already raising the <\/span>PM10<\/sub> content of the NCR\u2019s air<\/span><\/b>, worsening pollution in Delhi. <\/span>It is also posing a <\/span>grave threat <\/span><\/b>to the ecology of the agriculturally vital north-western states<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Impact on the<\/b><\/span> rich biodiversity of the Aravallis<\/span><\/b> comprising a large variety of plants, animals, and birds.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the issue with the <\/span><\/b>Draft NCR Regional Plan 2041?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Governments of the four north-western states are aware of the danger from the unrestrained denudation of the Aravallis, but <\/span>little substantive work<\/span><\/b> has been done to improve the situation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The draft NCR Regional Plan 2041<\/span><\/b> also does not deal with this issue with required urgency.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the contrary, It redefines the natural conservation zone, <\/span>keeping most part of the Aravallis out of it. <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Curbs regarding construction activity will virtually be lifted if the Regional Plan 2041 is adopted and enforced in its present shape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Draft NCR Regional Plan 2041<\/span><\/b>, therefore, <\/span>needs to be revisited and suitably modified<\/span><\/b> to include the entire Aravalli range in the natural conservation zone<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although ideally, the govt should prepare a <\/span>separate plan for rejuvenating the Aravallis<\/span><\/b> to allow it to play its inherent role as the Thar Desert\u2019s outer barrier.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
