Polio vaccination<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> The administration of the third dose<\/strong> of polio vaccine<\/a><\/strong><\/span> for children aged 12-23 months declined five percentage points<\/strong> in 2020, compared to 2019 \u2014 the worst drop since 1991. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> In terms of overall coverage, at 85%, India\u2019s polio vaccination levels went back to those witnessed in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n In the case of DPT, the first dose<\/strong> for children aged 12-23 months fell by seven percentage points<\/strong> \u2014 the worst fall since 1991. <\/span><\/p>\n The last time DPT shots had registered a decline (of one percentage point)<\/em> was in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n Tuberculosis (TB)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Administration of the tuberculosis (TB)<\/a><\/strong><\/span> vaccine was also down seven percentage points<\/strong> compared to last year. The last time the country witnessed a decline was in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n Rotavirus and <\/strong>pneumococcal vaccine<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Only these two vaccines witnessed an increase in coverage among children compared to last year. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> The rotavirus vaccine coverage for children aged 12-23 months went up<\/strong> from 53% to 82%, whereas pneumococcal uptake increased from<\/strong> 15% to 21% between 2019 and 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n India\u2019s performance in some cases was one of the worst among the world\u2019s major economies.<\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> In terms of the drop in TB vaccine<\/strong>, among the major economies, India was behind Mexico, Brazil and the UAE<\/strong>. It also fared worse than all South Asia nations, with even Pakistan and Afghanistan increasing coverage during the pandemic year.<\/p>\n –<\/strong> With respect to hepatitis B<\/strong>, India was behind Brazil and Indonesia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n –<\/strong> In the DPT vaccination<\/strong>, only Pakistan and Nepal fared worse than India in the South Asian region.<\/p>\n One of the primary reasons for this seems to be setbacks to rural health manpower and its crippling impact on rural health programmes<\/strong>, including the government\u2019s vaccination drives. <\/span><\/p>\n –<\/strong> Acc to the National Health Mission, there has been a drastic decline in the total number of health and nutrition days (HNDs)<\/strong> held in thousands of villages in 2020 as compared to the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n Also, there was a fall in the number of ASHA (accredited social health activist)<\/em> workers<\/strong> recruited by the government in Indian villages.
