News: <\/span><\/b>Recently, Satellite images have revealed that the Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army is constructing a bridge in eastern Ladakh connecting the north and south banks of Pangong Tso.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This area has been one of the five stand-off points in the tussle between India and China, and would reduce the distance for Chinese forces by 140 km.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been the Chinese efforts at developing formidable border infrastructure?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Since 1999, China has constructed dual-use infrastructure<\/strong> in Tibet under its western development strategy<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, after 2015 the <\/span>speed of development has increased many folds<\/span><\/b> due to introduction of military reforms in China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China has initiated many projects for border infrastructure like construction of <\/span>feeder roads<\/span><\/b> on the border, <\/span>railway lines, airports, helipads<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>border villages<\/span><\/b> across India-China and Bhutan-China borders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has built 628 border villages<\/strong> in the areas bordering India and Bhutan.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China is developing these infra for <\/span>dual purpose<\/span><\/b> and thus plans to strategically connect these border points to the nearest border defensive unit regiment HQs<\/span>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How will these projects be advantageous to China?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

On completing these projects, China would be able to <\/span>assert its sovereignty on the disputed territories with India.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would <\/span>reduce the turn-around time for mobilisation and deployment of forces<\/span><\/b> from the interior.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would help <\/span>support the forward-deployed border forces<\/span><\/b> for a longer duration through <\/span>improved logistics capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This border infrastructure construction along with renaming 15 places in Arunachal, which it calls \u2018south Tibet\u2019, and the implementation of the land border law will help China to <\/span>consolidate its claims on Indian territories.<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

–<\/strong> Raising a <\/span>strike corps for emergency action<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Attempts to <\/span>modernise armed forces<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Raising the strike and <\/span>surveillance capabilities.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Building <\/span>capacity to expand the theatre of conflict <\/span><\/b>to the high seas.\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the challenges that India needs to overcome?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

India needs to ensure that following challenges are overcome<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Bureaucratic inertia<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

– Lack of coordination<\/span><\/b> between civilian and military establishments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Budgetary limitations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Reactionary nature of weapons acquisition policy<\/span><\/b> and streamline it so that the demand and supply gap is plugged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India needs to <\/span>plug loopholes fast in its administrative structure<\/span><\/b> so that it doesn\u2019t have to face severe consequences in terms of National security.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
