News: <\/span><\/b>China has been over the years aggressively pushing for consolidating its claims on border territories disputed with India through various steps like building Border Infrastructure, modernising its armed forces etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest in line of these measures is the introduction of a <\/span>new land border law.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is this new land border law?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

How will this new law affect India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

China with the help of this law will try to <\/span>convert a territory dispute over borders into a sovereignty dispute<\/span><\/b> and prevent any give or take of territory.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, China will attempt to <\/span>settle its Han population in the border villages<\/span><\/b> of Tibetan regions, reversing established demographic patterns.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It will also help it to make any negotiation beyond the limits of these villages an impossible process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As according to the <\/span>Border Defence Cooperation Agreements of 2005 and 2012<\/span><\/b> , any negotiations for border settlements will be done keeping in mind the convenience of the local population in the border regions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What has been China\u2019s history in terms of its expansionist tendencies?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Chinese have always been an expansionist civilisation<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the days of <\/span>Qing dynasty to the 20th century<\/span><\/b> they have resisted several occasions where the other parties have involved to delineate the boundary with China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even during the <\/span>Simla Convention of 1913-14,<\/span><\/b> China refused to recognise any demarcation of boundaries between Tibet and China.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note- <\/em><\/strong>Simla Convention\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>officially the\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Convention Between Great Britain, China, and Tibet<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0was an ambiguous treaty concerning the status of\u00a0Tibet negotiated by representatives of the\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Republic of China, Tibet and Great Britain.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Since then, China has attempted to increase its territorial reach through <\/span>alleged ancient maps, ambiguous treaties and declarations.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the Current Chinese expansionist strategy like?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

China has till now used the strong-arm tactics with both India and Bhutan but has now changed its strategy of dealing with Bhutan. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"ChinaIt has offered to forgo its claims in the larger parts of North Bhutan in lieu of gaining a relatively smaller area in West Bhutan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will help China in <\/span>expanding into the Chumbi Valley<\/span><\/b> in the South, threatening the narrow and strategic Siliguri corridor in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has also made a new claim on <\/span>Sakteng sanctuary in Bhutan<\/span><\/b> which may form a launchpad for future operations against Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China has also strengthened its operation with its <\/span>all weather\u00a0friend Pakistan<\/span><\/b>. China has a lot of a<\/span>rmy personnel exchange program<\/span><\/b> with it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China has been giving <\/span>\u201cconfrontational training\u201d<\/span><\/b> to its troops and officers to prepare them for any emergency action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be the reasons for the\u00a0recent\u00a0aggressive expansionist tendencies of China?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The recent stand-off at Ladakh may be triggered due to following factors apart from the general expansionist tendencies of Beijing:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

– Abrogation of Article 370<\/span><\/b> in Jammu and Kashmir.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> India\u2019s rapid <\/span>development of communications<\/span><\/b> in the border areas (roads, habitats and airfields).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Modernisation<\/span><\/b> of India\u2019s <\/span>Armed Forces<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

–<\/strong> Attempt by China to <\/span>physically link with Pakistan in the Northern Areas<\/span><\/b> by removing the Indian wedge of <\/span>DBO (Daulat beg oldie)<\/span><\/b> which can serve as <\/span>the doorway to the Karakoram Pass<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India <\/span>cannot<\/span><\/b> rely exclusively on <\/span>purely military actions<\/span><\/b> and will need a <\/span>comprehensive strategy<\/span><\/b> to overcome its disadvantages and secure a long term solution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
