But the\u202f<\/span>difference in conditions, issues and aspirations<\/span><\/b>\u202fprovided difficulties that\u202f<\/span>required stoic attention.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following administrative issues hindered integration of princely states:<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Territorial Contiguity\u202f<\/span><\/b>or lack of it such as in\u202f<\/span>Patiala, Kapurthala<\/span><\/b>\u202fetc. which were combined into\u202f<\/span>PEPSU<\/span><\/b>, or\u202f<\/span>Jammu and Kashmir<\/span><\/b>\u202fwhose connectivity was threatened due to disruption of\u202f<\/span>railway and roads<\/span><\/b>\u202fpassing through\u202f<\/span>areas under Pakistan.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Lapse of British paramountcy\u202f<\/span><\/b>created a lacuna of sovereignty.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Residual Powers:\u202f<\/span><\/b>Princely states\u202f<\/span>surrendered only rights enumerated<\/span><\/b>\u202fin Instrument of Accession and\u202f<\/span>retained administrative roles<\/span><\/b>\u202fas rulers.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The\u202f<\/span>question of authority versus popular will<\/span><\/b>\u202fas the legitimate deciding factor divided opinions, such as in Junagadh, Hyderabad and J&K.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Princely Privileges:\u202f<\/span><\/b>The extent of privileges to be retained, nature of compensation and\u202f<\/span>hierarchy among princes, privy purses<\/span><\/b>\u202fetc. were\u202f<\/span>points of contention.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Religious role of Kings\u202f<\/span><\/b>such as of\u202f<\/span>Travancore in management of Padmanabhaswamy temple\u202f<\/span><\/b>and its assets were complex problems.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Following socio-cultural problems existed in integration of Indian princely states:<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Hyderabad\u202f<\/span><\/b>had problems of\u202f<\/span>peasant discontent.\u202f<\/span><\/b>For example, the<\/span>\u202fTelangana movement.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. J&K\u202f<\/span><\/b>had social\u202f<\/span>discontent against the king<\/span><\/b>, and a\u202f<\/span>communal divide in economic status<\/span><\/b>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. There was cultural difference between\u202f<\/span>Telugu-speaking parts<\/span><\/b>\u202fof Hyderabad and\u202f<\/span>Urdu-speaking and Marathi speaking\u202f<\/span><\/b>regions.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. There was<\/span>\u202feconomic divide between regions<\/span><\/b>\u202fto be integrated such as between\u202f<\/span>Baroda\u202f<\/span><\/b>and other princely states of Saurashtra region.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
