Moderates were the\u202f<\/span>early proponents and leaders of Indian national movement\u202f<\/span><\/b>associated with the Indian National Congress. They used\u202f<\/span>methods of petitions, questioning and debate<\/span><\/b>\u202fto vocalise India\u2019s\u202f<\/span>national subjugation<\/span><\/b>\u202fand need for<\/span>\u202fits amelioration.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Role of moderates in widening the base of India\u2019s freedom movement:<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Moderates\u202f<\/span>provided ideological base\u202f<\/span><\/b>for growth of freedom movement. For example,\u202f<\/span>Dada Bhai\u00a0Naoroji\u2019s\u00a0economic critique<\/span><\/b>\u202fof\u00a0colonial rule created conviction about exploitative nature of the British rule in India.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

Gopal Krishna Gokhale\u202f<\/span><\/b>was the\u202f<\/span>political guru of Mahatma Gandhi<\/span><\/b>\u202fand inspired him to travel around India to learn about the\u202f<\/span>condition and needs of the nation.\u202f<\/span><\/b>Gandhi would later catalyse\u202f<\/span>biggest mass movements in the history\u202f<\/span><\/b>of the world.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Moderates created an understanding of<\/span>\u202fcommon political, economic and cultural interests of Indians\u202f<\/span><\/b>across the length and breadth of the country.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Council reforms such as the\u202f<\/span>Indian Council Acts 1892<\/span><\/b>, expanded the scope of\u202f<\/span>political participation for Indians.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The lack of success\u202f<\/span><\/b>of moderates\u2019 methods,\u202f<\/span>unintentionally\u202f<\/span><\/b>provoked the\u202f<\/span>rise of extremist faction,\u202f<\/span><\/b>which aroused masses against the British such as during\u202f<\/span>Swadeshi movement.<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    2. They\u202f<\/span>neither provided substantive nor descriptive representation\u202f<\/span><\/b>of masses.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Many of the moderates were\u202f<\/span>convinced about the fundamentally good nature of British rule,<\/span><\/b>\u202funaware of its stark repercussions for the common poor.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. The cause of mass politics was harmed due to<\/span>\u202fmoderates\u2019 intransigence<\/span><\/b>\u202fwhich led to<\/span>\u202fSurat split<\/span><\/b>\u202fin congress and\u202f<\/span>years of inactivity in national politics<\/span><\/b>.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
