The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an\u00a0intergovernmental organization\u00a0found in Shanghai, with the objective of\u00a0political, economic and security cooperation\u00a0between the member nations. India became a permanent member of the\u00a0SCO in 2017.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The aims and objectives of the SCO includes the following<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
    \n
  1. To strengthen the relations between member states, by deepening political, security and economic cooperation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. To strive for joint cooperation between the members to confront threats emanating from terrorism, extremism and separatism.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. SCO aims to move towards developing a democratic and equitable international political order.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. To ensure joint efforts in maintaing\u00a0peace, security and stability in the region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. To deepen engagements in field of trade\/commerce, transport, tourism, environment, cultural linkages, education, research and technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

    A critical examination of aims and objectives of SCO is presented below:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. India-Pakistan-Russia-China\u00a0relations\u00a0create a complex matrix of diverging and conflicting interests.\u00a0For example: different interests in Taliban-Afghanistan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. China has shown little respect to international rule-based order.\u00a0Cheque-book\u00a0and wolf\u00a0warrior\u00a0diplomacy, Human rights violations and\u00a0\u2018re-education\u2019\u00a0camps,\u00a0HongKong\u00a0issue etc.\u00a0raise serious questions on Chinese\u00a0commitments\u00a0to\u00a0aims and objectives of SCO.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Under the disguise of economic co-operation, China has pushed\u00a0its\u00a0BRI project through SCO.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Pakistan and China are known to\u00a0have\u00a0supported\u00a0terrorist and separatist organizations\u00a0raising questions on RATS mechanism.\u00a0China, Russia (Ukraine issue) and Pakistan are accused of destabilizing the regional peace, security and stability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Limited developmental cooperation between SCO countries during COVID waves shows\u00a0lack of\u00a0broad-based\u00a0engagement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The SCO, as a\u00a0regional inter-governmental organization\u00a0holds<\/span>\u00a0following importance for India<\/span><\/b>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. SCO\u00a0allows India to deepen its\u00a0strategic reach in Central Asia. India already has\u00a0substantial soft power potential\u00a0(Buddhist\u00a0linkages, Bollywood movies\u00a0etc.)\u00a0\u00a0in Central Asia, which it can\u00a0exploit through SCO.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. India\u2019s\u00a0membership of SCO\u00a0can\u00a0boost energy security\u00a0by\u00a0providing\u00a0access to\u00a0mineral and energy resources of the Central Asian countries.\u00a0The membership, with its emphasis in trade relations, provide an inroad for the Indian investors to explore the untapped market potential in the Central Asian region. For example, FICCI hosted the SCO Business Conclave.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. SCO can provide a platform to discuss bilateral issues with Pakistan and China.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. SCO can\u00a0play a pivotal role in\u00a0combating terrorism, extremism and radicalization. For example,\u00a0Dushanbe\u00a0declaration,\u00a0aims towards regional stability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      5. India\u2019s presence in the SCO will help in India\u2019s aim to link itself to the\u00a0larger Eurasian region, and to Europe via an INSTC. Thus,\u00a0boosting connectivity in the region.\u00a0SCO can play an important role in\u00a0deepening people to people engagement\u00a0through cooperation in the field of\u00a0education, medicine, tourism\u00a0etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The\u00a0inimical acts of Pakistan, border dispute with China etc.,\u00a0factors could minimize the positive outcomes from SCO.
