News<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>Electric vehicle (EV) industry may fall well short of its target of setting up a sufficient number of public charging stations in India this year<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the current status of charging infrastructure in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

According to a report by Grant Thornton-Bharat and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), India would need 4 lakh public charging stations<\/strong> to cater to an estimated total of two million EVs plying on the roads by 2026.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, according to data disclosed in the Parliament, India currently has only 1,028 public EV charging stations \u2014 almost 30% of which are in Delhi alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So there is huge demand-supply gap in charging infrastructure in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have been recent initiatives in this regard?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have set targets of 4,000 total EV charging stations by the end of 2022<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many Companies such as Tata Power, Ola have also set their targets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why has been this huge shortfall?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The previous efforts have been <\/span>very slow<\/span><\/b> as in the past two years, less than 1,000 public chargers compatible with all EVs have been installed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Setting up EV charging stations <\/span>doesn\u2019t generate revenue<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Around 94% of passenger vehicles are charged at home (in India), so there is very low demand for a public charging station right now.<\/span> Hence, the <\/span>cost of setting up is very high,<\/span><\/b> and use is very low.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lack of organised parking spaces<\/span><\/b> in India is also a big hindrance to setting up public chargers<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

It is imperative to <\/span>make public charging profitable.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is need for <\/span>faster charging.<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, India cannot simply adopt an international model and will <\/span>need its own set of regulations <\/span><\/b>to suit the market.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
