The\u00a0irrigation needs of agriculture\u00a0are at the heart of the\u00a0problem of water stress. In this perspective,\u00a0micro-irrigation is seen as a solution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Micro-irrigation can help in solving India\u2019s water crisis in following ways:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. It can address needs of\u00a0dryland farming\u00a0in regions with\u00a0depleting groundwater aquifers.\u00a0For example, in Punjab.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. It can help\u00a0reduce over-dependence on monsoon\u00a0and vulnerability to\u00a0drought. For example,\u00a0less than 50%\u00a0agriculture is irrigated\u00a0at present.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Efficient use of water\u00a0through micro-irrigation\u00a0can help\u00a0reduce the agricultural demand of water. This will help reduce\u00a0inter-state river water disputes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. It will help\u00a0move away from unsustainable irrigation\u00a0practices like flood irrigation which also lead to\u00a0ecological issues like ground water pollution, salinity,\u00a0eutrophication\u00a0etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    However,\u00a0micro-irrigation’ impact in solving India\u2019s water crisis\u00a0will be limited\u00a0due to following reasons:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Affordability\u00a0of micro-irrigation systems would be a challenge\u00a0for small and marginal farmers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Micro-irrigation cannot ameliorate\u00a0water-stress due to poor\u00a0ago-climatic choices\u00a0in crops. Such as\u00a0sugarcane and paddy cultivation in Rajasthan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
