Vulnerability of India to\u00a0Earthquake-related\u00a0hazards:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

According\u00a0to BIS,\u00a0more than\u00a058.6 percent of the landmass is prone to\u00a0earthquakes\u00a0of\u00a0moderate to very high intensity.\u00a0The occurrence of the\u00a0Killari earthquake in 1993\u00a0resulted in revision of the seismic zoning in India\u00a0with\u00a0the low hazard zone or Seismic Zone I\u00a0being\u00a0merged with Seismic Zone II.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    2. <\/span>Densely populated areas, extensive unscientific constructions and unplanned urbanization have increased risks associated with earthquake hazards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    3. Andaman & Nicobar Islands frequently experience damaging earthquakes due to being situated on an inter-plate boundary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    4. Increasing use of high-technology equipment, susceptible to small vibrations, in industry and academia, or underground utilities for electricity, internet etc. have increased susceptibility to disruption from relatively moderate ground shaking<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    5. Regions in Himalayan foothills are vulnerable to liquefaction and landslides due to earthquakes. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Salient features of\u00a0major disasters caused by earthquakes over last 3 decades:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. 1993 Latur:\u00a06.2 magnitude; relatively\u00a0shallow depth caused large surface damage;\u00a0causes remain debatable due to\u00a0lack of plate boundaries\u00a0in the region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. 1999 Chamoli:\u00a0Caused\u00a0by\u00a0thrust fault; resulted in\u00a0landslides, changes in\u00a0surface\u00a0water flow,\u00a0surface\u00a0rupture\u00a0and\u00a0disconnected valleys.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. 2001 Bhuj:\u00a0Associated with a\u00a0reactivated fault, which was previously unknown;\u00a0Great loss\u00a0of life and property due to\u00a0unmindful construction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami:\u00a0Created by\u00a0under-water seismic activity, created\u00a0massive waves\u00a0which flooded coastal areas and Islands, causing\u00a0long-term changes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. 2005 Kahmir:\u00a07.6 magnitude; Caused by severe\u00a0upthrust of\u00a0Indian plate against Eurasian plate, it created\u00a0multiple after-shocks.\u00a0Infrastructure and communication\u00a0were\u00a0disrupted.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
