News:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>India often confuse toilets with sanitation; but they are mere repositories to receive waste.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Poor sanitation and water-related issues\u00a0resulted in 1.04 million under-five child deaths\u00a0in India.\u00a0Also, poor sanitation costs India 5.2 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) annually.\u00a0In this regard, in the last decade, a massive push for sanitation,\u00a0provided\u00a0millions of the population\u00a0with\u00a0access to toilets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, much focus through big campaigns such as the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission (SBM) has been given to<\/span>\u00a0\u2018before the flush\u2019 levels\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in the process of sanitation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The stage from emptying of toilets, safe reuse and disposal has not been given a proper attention.\u00a0But toilets are mere repositories to receive waste; when we flush, the waste flows into a piped\u00a0drain, which\u00a0could be either connected or not, to a sewage treatment plant (STP).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore,\u00a0sanitation systems of the country have\u00a0been framed with the assumption that the human\u00a0labour\u00a0would be\u00a0always available for the service.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the issues\u00a0associated with sanitation program of India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Issues linked to type of toilets\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SBM claims that a majority of toilets in rural India are \u201ctwin pit leach pit\u201d type, which are self-contained treatment plants. They\u00a0do not require any additional grey water or\u00a0faecal\u00a0sludge management.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the report \u2018<\/span>From ODF to ODF Plus Rural Sanitation Strategy 2019-2029′\u00a0<\/span><\/b>reveals that the country still has thousands\u00a0of toilets\u00a0with single-pits or septic tanks that require desludging from time to time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Improper Sewage treatment facilities\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

78 per cent of sewage generated in India remains untreated and is unsafely disposed of in rivers, groundwater or lakes, contaminating 90 percent of all surface water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Issues\u00a0facing sanitation workers<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

At various steps across our sanitation value chain \u2014 from toilets to treatment plants \u2014 workers have to interact with\u00a0faecal\u00a0matter in extremely unsafe ways.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are inadequately provided with safety equipment and are not socially accepted.\u00a0Even during covid-19 pandemic, workers have been working unprotected, unappreciated and ignored.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are solutions to the sanitation issue?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First,\u00a0Faecal\u00a0sludge and plastic waste require proper management.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, Interventions such as the use of mini-sewer jetting machines, manual robots to access tapered lanes and clear clogged sewer pipes will enable upskilling\u00a0and rehabilitating\u00a0of manual scavengers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
