Non-refoulment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>principle that forbids a country from returning refugee<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to a country where they may face persecution. However, countries claiming to be democratic with open society\u00a0<\/span>often refuse to accept refugees\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and send them back raising following ethical questions: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

National interest vs global responsibility:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Countries deny refuge citing\u00a0<\/span>limited resources, security threats, primary responsibility towards their citizen<\/span><\/b>. However, responsibility as a member of global community is often violated. Nations justify their actions on utilitarian perspective (protecting their citizen) while neglecting deontological aspect (duty to protect) in dealing with refugees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Human rights\u00a0<\/span><\/b>are inalienable rights to life, liberty and opportunity to realize one\u2019s potential. Turning back the refugees deny them their basic human rights. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Turning back those in need goes\u00a0<\/span>against the Categorical imperative<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of Kant as it\u00a0<\/span>cannot<\/span><\/b>\u00a0be made into a\u00a0<\/span>universal principle<\/span><\/b>. Some countries are accused of using migrants as a tool of foreign policy as witnessed during\u00a0<\/span>2021 Belarus\u2013European Union border crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>This amounts to using people as means and not as end in themselves. Such actions do not pass the test of\u00a0<\/span>Gandhiji\u2019s Talisman<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(action keeping in mind the interest of weakest).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Most of the refugees\u00a0<\/span>suffer without any fault<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of their own. They become victim of violence due to\u00a0<\/span>\u2018accidents of birth\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0being born in particular country (Syria, Afghanistan), into a persecuted community (Ahmadiyas,\u00a0Rohningyas) etc. Denying them opportunity to escape violence and persecution goes against all ethical principle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Historical responsibility:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Western world is responsible for many<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>refugee\u00a0crisis. For example:\u00a0<\/span>colonial exploitation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and policies (Sykes-Picot Agreement),\u00a0<\/span>armed humanitarian intervention<\/span><\/b>\u00a0leading to civil wars (Middle East),\u00a0<\/span>climate<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>refugee<\/span><\/b>\u00a0etc. They should take historical responsibility for their actions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Standard of ethics in society:\u00a0Dehumanizing refugee<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>refusal to recognize their suffering<\/span><\/b>\u00a0set wrong example for future and lead to\u00a0<\/span>decline in values like care, empathy, compassion in the society.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Democratic liberal countries\/societies with\u00a0<\/span>resources and capacities<\/span><\/b>\u00a0should accept refugees and allow them to\u00a0<\/span>exercise their basic human right of life and pursuit of happiness<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
