You are Vice Principal of a degree college in one of the middle-class towns. Principal has recently retired and management is looking for his replacement. There are also feelers that the management may promote you as Principal. In the meantime, during annual examination the flying squad which came from the university caught two students red-handed involving in unfair means. A senior lecturer of the college was personally helping these students in this act. This senior lecturer also happens to be close to the management. One of the students was son of a local politician who was responsible in getting college affiliated to the present reputed university. The second student was son of a local businessman who has donated maximum funds for running of the college. You immediately informed the management regarding this unfortunate incident. The management told you to resolve the issue with flying squad at any cost. They further said that such incident will not only tarnish the image of the college but also the politician and businessman are very important personalities for the functioning of the college. You were also given hint that your further promotion to Principal depends on your capability in resolving this issue with flying squad. In the meantime, you were intimated by your administrative officer that certain members of the student union are protesting outside the college gate against the senior lecturer and the students involved in this incident and demanding strict action against defaulters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a) Discuss the ethical issues involved in the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

b) Critically examine the options available with you as Vice Principal. What option will you adopt and why?<\/span><\/p>\n

Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n

a) The<\/span>ethical issues involved<\/span><\/b>in the above case are:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Integrity<\/span><\/b>: The foremost ethical issue in this case is that of\u00a0<\/span>professional integrity<\/span><\/b>. While the senior lecturer has\u00a0<\/span>compromised his professional integrity<\/span><\/b>, the situation\u00a0is also a test of my own\u00a0<\/span>integrity,\u00a0as it\u00a0<\/span><\/b>creates a conflict between my\u00a0<\/span>values\/duty and personal interest.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Test of moral strength (morality)<\/span><\/b>: The present situation is also a\u00a0<\/span>test of my moral strength<\/span><\/b>, as one hand it is the\u00a0<\/span>lucrative opportunity to become the principal<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the college and on the other hand it is the\u00a0<\/span>duty to do the right thing<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

Impartiality:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The present situation involves the\u00a0<\/span>ethical issue of impartiality<\/span><\/b>, as the examination\u00a0<\/span>procedure has to be fair for all<\/span><\/b>, any leniency for a few students will make the\u00a0<\/span>process partial for other students<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u00a0Professional ethics<\/span><\/b>: The situation involves a\u00a0<\/span>test of my professional ethics<\/span><\/b>. As\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0remains to be seen,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>if I can carry out my duty\u00a0<\/span>without any considerations of fear or favour.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            1. College is a place for students to\u00a0<\/span>learn righteous values<\/span><\/b>. This option will teach the students\u00a0<\/span>importance of ethics and morality<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            2. Also,\u00a0<\/span>involvement of a senior lecturer<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in the incident, highlights that the\u00a0<\/span>situation requires strict action.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            3. As gaining\u00a0<\/span>promotion by unfair ways<\/span><\/b>, will defy the sanctity of means, violating the principle of\u00a0<\/span>purity of means and ends<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            4. This option will be\u00a0<\/span>fair towards all the students<\/span><\/b>\u00a0who were honestly writing their exams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            5. This option will\u00a0<\/span>aid in pacifying the protests<\/span><\/b>\u00a0by the students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            6. This option will uphold the\u00a0<\/span>credibility of the college<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as a fair and impartial institution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
