The debt-to-equity ratio<\/strong> of listed firms dropped<\/strong> to a six-year low of 0.59 in 2020-21, compared to 0.73 in the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reserve Bank of India\u2019s recent report<\/span><\/b> on the banking sector has also revealed that non-financial private firms have been net savers over the last three years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be the reasons for this?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Improvement in corporate and banking sector<\/strong>: As compared to the situation until a few years ago, the state of both the corporate and the banking sector has improved. The impact of pandemic-related disruption has been considerably lower than anticipated for both corporations and the banking system. In fact, earnings have improved for large corporations over the last few quarters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deleveraging process in the corporate sector is also <\/span>being helped by buoyancy in the stock market<\/span><\/b>, which has enabled firms to raise record money from the market.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n
A buoyant market is the one which is witnessing a lot of trading activity and where prices of stocks are gradually increasing over time.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
What can be disadvantages of this?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

While this points towards <\/span>strengthening of the corporate balance sheet, <\/span><\/b>but it also reflects the <\/span>unwillingness of investors to invest<\/span><\/b> and highlights the <\/span>underlying weakness in the economy<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This<\/span> may <\/span>impact the asset quality<\/span><\/b> in the banking sector once the pandemic-related support extended to borrowers begins to be removed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This may also lead to <\/span>sustained lower demand for credit<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>Especially when the credit demand is <\/span>expected to remain low<\/span><\/b> due to relatively low level of industrial capacity utilisation and weak underlying demand in the economy<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Banks have been focusing <\/span>on retail lending<\/span><\/b>, but that too has limits as large number of households have suffered income losses<\/span><\/p>\n
