News<\/span><\/b>: <\/span>U.S. tech company Apple has reached the $3 trillion-mark in market capitalisation. This now makes it wealthier than most countries.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can India advance towards creating such companies?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

This<\/span> will require India to establish ecosystems that are innovation driven. Following are some key steps to achieve this:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Sustained public funding<\/span><\/b> to build world-class research and development infrastructure and <\/span>hiring the best faculty<\/span><\/b> in our university system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The initial funding<\/strong> to build large research infrastructures needs to come from the public exchequer<\/strong>. Then it can be financed by private investors, like angel investors and venture capitalists. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Equally important is <\/span>encouraging and providing the faculty towards critical thinking<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Ecosystems can be build by connecting institutions nearby<\/span><\/b>. This will lead to facilitating easy access to tools and equipment for each others\u2019 students and faculty, creating an open, inclusive atmosphere, and encompassing each other\u2019s strengths.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There should be availability of excellent tech transfer offices, access to legal counsel and law firms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Tech transfer offices and incubators play a vital role in commercialising technologies<\/span><\/b>. Their part is to make sure that the universities are incentivised while providing a physical space with technical and legal help for individual faculty-driven innovations to get commercialised<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Proper legal frameworks<\/span><\/b> are needed for university-driven innovation to mature. After consultations and modifications, Parliament needs to pass the <\/span>Protection and Utilization of Public Funded Intellectual Property Bill (PUPFIP), 2008 .<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will help remove the universities’ lack of clarity on intellectual property rights to <\/span>commercialise inventions from government-funded research programmes<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5)<\/strong> It is essential to broaden the <\/span>reach to cover all streams within the liberal arts<\/span><\/b> apart from the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field which will lead this innovation revolution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Curricula <\/span><\/b>need to get away from focusing exclusively on awarding degrees and also focus on <\/span>vocational training<\/span><\/b> towards developing students’ skills for a specific task.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
