{"id":161793,"date":"2022-01-14T20:43:33","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T15:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=161793"},"modified":"2022-01-14T20:43:33","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T15:13:33","slug":"delhis-forest-cover-lost-for-first-time-in-a-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/delhis-forest-cover-lost-for-first-time-in-a-decade\/","title":{"rendered":"Delhi&#8217;s forest cover lost for first time in a decade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the news?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change has released the \u2018India State of Forest Report 2021\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a biennial report released by the Forest Survey of India(FSI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The report provides information on forest cover, tree cover, mangrove cover, growing stock, carbon stock in India\u2019s forests, forest fire monitoring, forest cover in tiger reserve areas, above ground estimates of biomass using SAR data &amp; climate change hotspots in Indian forests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the present ISFR 2021<\/span><b>, FSI has included a new chapte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>r<\/strong> related to the assessment of forest cover in the Tiger Reserves, Corridors and Lion conservation area of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Data:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The report is based on the data from Indian Remote Sensing satellite data (<strong>Resourcesat-II<\/strong>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Categories of Forests:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The report has listed four categories of forests and the state of forest survey is based on these. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2013 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Very Dense Forest<\/strong> (with tree canopy density of 70 per cent or above)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u2013 Moderately Dense Forest<\/strong> (tree canopy density of 40 per cent or above but less than 70 per cent)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u2013 Open Forest<\/strong> (tree canopy density of 10 per cent or above but less than 40 per cent)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u2013 Scrub<\/strong> (tree canopy density less than 10 per cent)<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the findings of the report with respect to Delhi?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-161796 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/88887159.png?resize=415%2C404&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/88887159.png?resize=300%2C292&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/88887159.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Loss of Forest Cover:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For the first time, Delhi has lost the forest cover. It has<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lost 0.44 sq km of forest cover since 2019. On the other hand, most other states and Union territories have shown an increase in overall forest cover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Improvement in Quality of Forest:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The forest cover has reduced slightly, but the quality of forest has improved. The moderately dense forests have increased, and open forest systems have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thinned slightly. The thinning of the forest cover can be attributed to new infrastructure projects and authorized felling of trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tree Cover:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The tree cover (outside the forest area) in Delhi has increased. The tree cover in Delhi went up from 129 sq km in 2019 to 147 sq km in 2021, an all-time high since 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reasons for Shrinking Forest Cover: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Land use change and diversion of forests for infrastructure development are the reasons for the city\u2019s shrinking forest cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Significance of Forest Cover for Delhi: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forests serve as a city\u2019s lungs. Delhi is overwhelmed by pollution and protecting its forests is non-negotiable.
