Why slow progress is a cause of concern?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u00a0set a target of\u00a0<\/span>33% forest cover<\/span><\/b>\u00a0under the\u00a0<\/span>Indian Forest Policy of 1988.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now,\u00a0India has set\u00a0an\u00a0<\/span>emission neutrality target<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for itself in\u00a0<\/span>CoP-26 summit<\/span><\/b>\u00a0held in Glasgow.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although\u00a0v<\/span>ery dense\u00a0forests<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(with a canopy cover of 70% or more<\/span>) have reported an\u00a0<\/span>uptick<\/span><\/b>. But they make up\u00a0<\/span>less than a seventh<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the 713,789-sq-km of\u00a0<\/span>India\u2019s deemed forest<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018<\/span>moderately dense\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b>forests,\u00a0which have a higher share<\/span>,\u00a0are on\u00a0decline<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This becomes much more important in the light of the fact that\u00a0<\/span>forests<\/span><\/b>\u00a0themselves are\u00a0<\/span>vulnerable to the effects of a warming planet.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Example- Ecologists have warned that the\u00a0<\/span>Himalayas\u2019 leaf cover has already begun to display signs of stress<\/span><\/b>\u00a0at various altitude belts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Government should\u00a0<\/span>prevent any changes in Forest Conservation Act of 1980<\/span><\/b>\u00a0that may ease the diversion of forest land for other uses<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The strategy of\u00a0<\/span>emission limit on the use of fossil fuels also has limitations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and must be supported by a sound afforestation plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Example-Globally, forests are said to absorb a net 7.6 billion\u00a0tonnes\u00a0of CO2 every year<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If India has to achieve its target of having carbon sink of 2.5-3 billion\u00a0tonnes\u00a0by 2030 it needs to have a\u00a0<\/span>fast pace of forest expansion.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
