According to the\u00a0<\/span>twentieth livestock census<\/span><\/a>\u00a0around 95.8% of livestock population in India is concentrated in rural areas. This makes access to veterinary services,\u00a0a major challenge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To mitigate this problem, Government has introduced Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs)<\/span>\u00a0under the\u00a0revised provisions of\u00a0<\/span>Livestock Health and Disease Control<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(LH&DC)\u00a0programme.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are MVUs?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MVU are vans which are equipped with veterinarian and para-veterinarian, equipment for diagnosis, treatment and minor surgery, other basic requirements for the treatment of animals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0are\u00a0the benefits of this initiative?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Improves Longevity and productivity of\u00a0Live\u00a0Stocks<\/span><\/b>-Farmers are often compelled to travel far from their villages whenever their animals need treatment. This also adversely impacts the longevity and the productivity of the livestock.<\/span>\u00a0MVUs will help to overcome this issue with its\u00a0<\/span>doorstep delivery model.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Zoonotic diseases<\/span><\/b>-There is a drastic rise in cases of zoonotic diseases which make availability of adequate testing and treatment facilities for veterinary diseases very essential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anti microbial\u00a0resistance<\/span><\/b>-The gap created by the unavailability of adequate facilities is filled by Quacks or untrained animal health workers<\/span>. This\u00a0leads to inappropriate treatment and inadequate administration of antibiotics which can cause Antibiotic resistance. This is a threat to human health<\/span>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MVU model will mitigate the issue of antimicrobial resistance and is in alignment with the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018One Health vision\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0laid down by the Global Action Plan of WHO.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rural poverty<\/span><\/b>-A majority of livestock farmers have two to four animals per household.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Any improvement in the longevity and the productivity of the livestock will go a long way towards alleviating rural poverty<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Milk loss-<\/span><\/b>This will help to lower the milk loss and subsequent monetary loss to the farmers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Employment generation<\/span><\/b>– Increasing adoption of MVUs across the country will lead to a surge in employment opportunities\u00a0<\/span>for veterinarians and assistants.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
