The Union Minister for Science & Technology has addressed the joint India-UK meet on \u201cSustaining Food Production under Environmental Stress\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n The meeting is being organised jointly by National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), and University of Birmingham, UK and supported by <\/span>Newton Bhabha Fund <\/a><\/strong><\/span>and British Council.<\/span><\/p>\n The South Asian region is facing the shrinking <\/span>Arable land<\/b> (any land capable of being ploughed and used to grow crops) <\/span><\/em>besides the problem of global climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n According to World Bank data, arable land in South Asia was reported at 43.18% in 2018 which has been stagnant since the early 1970s<\/strong> and recently declining.<\/span><\/p>\n To fight against this, the global pattern of food production and distribution may need to shift significantly as climate change progresses.<\/span><\/p>\n For this, India-UK can collaborate to develop a coherent and stakeholder-relevant R&D programme.<\/span><\/p>\n Moreover, India and the UK can also collaborate on issues of mutual concern, such as achieving the goals of food security and zero hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n NABI <\/span>is the first Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute<\/strong>, established in 2010. <\/span>It is an autonomous institute under <\/span>the Department of Biotechnology.<\/span><\/p>\n The institute aims at catalysing the transformation of the Agri-food sector in India.<\/span><\/p>\n Located at:<\/b> Mohali, Punjab\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Source: <\/b>This post is based on the article<\/span> \u2018<\/b>Union Minister addresses India-UK meet on \u201cSustaining Food Production under Environmental Stress\u201d<\/b>\u2019<\/b> published in<\/span> PIB <\/b>on<\/span> 19th<\/sup> January 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the news?
