And many of them succumb.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the findings of this study on Superbugs?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superbugs kill around 1.27 million people globally every year. Almost 30% or 3.89 lakh of these deaths occurred in South Asia in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high levels of hospitalisations from Covid-19 have possibly accelerated the burden of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/antimicrobial-awareness-week-2021-how-resistance-to-antibiotics-develops\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as most patients were prescribed antibiotics.<em> (In India, a five-day course of common antibiotics such as doxycycline or amoxicillin was given to several Covid patients.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study has also highlighted three<strong> concerns going forward<\/strong>: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; growing drug resistance in children<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; tepid response by governments and <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; lack of research for new antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><em><b>Note:<\/b> In 2019, one in five global deaths attributable to AMR occurred in kids under five\u2014often from previously treatable infections.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the study has also found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMR disproportionately affects poor individuals who have little access to second-line, more expensive antibiotics that could work when first-line drugs fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b>This post is based on the article \u2018<strong>Superbugs claim 1.3m lives a year, 3.9L in S Asia alone<\/strong><b>\u2019 <\/b>published in<b> TOI <\/b>on<b> 20<sup>th<\/sup> January 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
