What\u00a0is\u00a0the issue?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

As it cannot depend entirely on energy generated through Sun or wind, Europe has been relying more on natural gas to make up the electricity shortfall<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Europe\u2019s sudden\u00a0increased demand\u00a0for natural gas has\u00a0<\/span>pushed up the prices of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG),<\/span><\/b>\u00a0the form in which gas\u00a0is traded globally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Higher gas prices have pushed up energy bills\u00a0globally\u00a0for households and are expected to\u00a0impact household spending and consumption\u00a0as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sudden dependence on natural gas during winter has also made European countries wary of upsetting Russia amidst the Ukraine conflict.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the implications of this upsurge in Natural gas demand on other sectors of global economy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Natural gas is used to produce urea \u2013 if gas prices go up,\u00a0<\/span>fertiliser\u00a0also becomes expensive<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expensive\u00a0fertilizer\u00a0means more\u00a0<\/span>expensive food<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 that will hurt the world\u2019s poor disproportionately.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the lessons for India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India is relatively less affected as the share of natural gas in the country\u2019s energy mix is low but will still face\u00a0<\/span>problems due to high food prices.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This will be above the\u00a0<\/span>negative effect that pandemic<\/span><\/b>\u00a0has already inflicted on the poor and disadvantaged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India though has ambitious plans for using renewable technologies but doesn\u2019t have the financial\u00a0resources that are\u00a0available\u00a0with\u00a0the European nations.\u00a0So\u00a0India\u00a0should adopt\u00a0<\/span>a balanced approach in energy transition<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cheap and reliable energy sources should not be abandoned<\/span><\/b>\u00a0until the alternatives have been stringently tested. India will be especially hard hit if oil prices spike as it\u00a0is\u00a0highly\u00a0dependent on\u00a0import.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
