News: <\/span><\/b>The hardship visible in the form of deaths, joblessness, hunger<\/span> is not just the direct consequence of the pandemic alone, but it is the result of the prevailing inequality in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the level of inequality in Indian society?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

While the number of <\/span>dollar billionaires in India expanded by 39% in the past year, at the same time, as many as 84% of <\/span><\/b>Indian households suffered a fall of income.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to RBI, <\/span>120 million jobs were lost<\/span><\/b>, of which 92 million were in the informal sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As per FAO, <\/span>India is home to a quarter of all undernourished<\/span><\/b> people around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oxfam reports that daily-wage workers topped the numbers of people who committed suicide in 2020, followed by self-employed and unemployed individuals.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Income inequalities<\/span><\/b> make pandemic like <\/span>situation even worse<\/span><\/b> for those <\/span>disadvantaged<\/span><\/b> by caste, gender and religious identities. <\/span><\/p>\n

What are the causes?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Lack of decent social housing<\/span><\/b> and clean water supply, <\/span>secured jobs, free necessary healthcare<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Oxfam, <\/span>India spends <\/span><\/b>only 3.54% of its budgetary resources on<\/span> healthcare<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>much less than other middle-income countries<\/span><\/b> like Brazil (9.51), South Africa (8.25) and China (5.35)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, <\/span>60% of health spending in India is out-of-pocket<\/span><\/b> which among the highest in the world, and is also a major cause of poverty.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward? <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

State should assume <\/span>responsibility<\/span><\/b> to provision <\/span>quality healthcare, education, food, pension, clean water and housing<\/span><\/b> in affordable ways for all citizens<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The resources for all of this can be managed by expanding the taxation on the super-rich. Government can <\/span>introduce wealth tax and inheritance tax.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
