However, the <\/span>World Bank\u2019s biannual Global Economic Prospects report<\/span><\/b> shows that the effect of the pandemic is far from over.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the predictions in the report for global economy?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

It forecasts that <\/span>global economic growth will slow<\/span><\/b> to 4.1% in 2022, from 5.5% last year. This is because <\/span>governments globally are losing the capacity to provide further fiscal support<\/span><\/b> because of rising debt burdens, supply-chain bottlenecks that impede the flow of goods and services, and resultant rising inflation. This also means that several economies are at <\/span>high risk of debt distress<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Energy prices<\/span><\/b> will <\/span>surge <\/span><\/b>further.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the report projects a high growth rate for some economies<\/strong> like 10% for Argentina, 8.3%,<\/span> for India but there is a catch in this statistic. This growth is the result of the <\/span>base year effect, <\/span><\/b>as the pandemic caused a contraction in many of the economies in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Usually, emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs), helped by their lower base, grow faster than advanced economies. But, they will perform poorer than advanced economies in 2023. This is because EMDEs have limited policy space to provide additional support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the reasons for this uneven growth?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

One of the main reasons for the uneven recovery\u00a0<\/span>is the recent growth of <\/span>hyper nationalism<\/span><\/b>. It is typically <\/span>disastrous for an economy in the long run.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Countries under the influence of hyper nationalism try to become self-sufficient by <\/span>raising barriers to trade, capital and ideas from elsewhere.<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the possible implications of this hyper nationalism?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

This <\/span>may stagnate grow<\/span><\/b>th<\/strong> (as happened in Argentina in the early decades of the 20th<\/em><\/span> century)<\/em> and <\/span>prevent the development of the society<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
