{"id":165647,"date":"2022-02-01T20:44:01","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T15:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=165647"},"modified":"2022-02-01T20:44:01","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T15:14:01","slug":"3rd-world-neglected-tropical-diseases-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/3rd-world-neglected-tropical-diseases-day\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the news?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day was observed to raise awareness for neglected tropical diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day is observed every year on January 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aim: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To serve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a catalyst to translate awareness into action, secure increased resources for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and crucially facilitate political leadership and ownership of NTD programmes from affected countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Theme:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Achieving health equity to end the neglect of poverty-related diseases&#8217;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> NTD Day was organized by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) by illuminating the iconic New Delhi Railway Station to generate awareness about NTDs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NTDs are caused mostly by a variety of pathogens including viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and toxins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are \u201cneglected\u201d because they are almost absent from the global health agenda of the developed countries and are associated with stigma and social exclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/jan-30-declared-world-neglected-tropical-diseases-day-by-wha\/\"><b><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Click Here to read more about NTDs<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the steps taken by India to eliminate NTDs?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><em><b>Firstly,<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India has already eliminated several NTDs, including guinea worm, trachoma, and yaws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Secondly,<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A WHO-supported regional alliance was established by governments of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal in 2005 to expedite early diagnosis and treatment of the most vulnerable populations and improve disease surveillance and control of sandfly populations (Kala-azar).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Thirdly,<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Preventive methods like Mass Drug Administration (MDA) rounds are periodically deployed in endemic areas, during which anti-filarial medicines are provided free-of-cost to at-risk communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Fourthly,<\/b><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vector-control measures like Indoor Residual Spraying rounds are undertaken in endemic areas to prevent sandfly breeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Fifthly<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>,<\/em><\/strong> State and central governments have also introduced wage compensation schemes for those suffering from Kala-Azar and its sequela (a condition which is the consequence of a previous disease or injury) known as Post-Kala Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>3rd World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><b>PIB <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> 1st Feb 2022.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
