{"id":166155,"date":"2022-02-03T19:15:58","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T13:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=166155"},"modified":"2022-02-03T19:18:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T13:48:20","slug":"world-wetlands-day-sanctuaries-in-gujarat-uttar-pradesh-listed-as-ramsar-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-wetlands-day-sanctuaries-in-gujarat-uttar-pradesh-listed-as-ramsar-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"World Wetlands Day: Sanctuaries in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh listed as Ramsar sites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the occasion of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/centre-for-wetland-conservation-and-management\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Wetlands Day,<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh have been included as Ramsar Site from India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India now has 49 Ramsar sites which is the highest in South Asia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the National<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wetland Decadal Change Atlas was also launched.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is <\/b><b>Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khijadiya sanctuary is located in Gujarat.It is a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> freshwater wetland located near the coast of the Gulf of Kutch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was formed following the creation of a bund (dike) in 1920 by the then ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Nawanagar to protect farmlands from saltwater ingress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary is now part of Marine National Park, Jamnagar, the first marine national park in the country.The sanctuary is also part of the Central Asian Flyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site provides habitat to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endangered Pallas\u2019s fish-eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) and Indian skimmer (Rynchops albicollis), and the vulnerable common pochard (Aythya ferina).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site also regularly supports more than 1% of the south and south-west Asian population of Dalmatian pelicans, more than 2% of greylag goose and more than 20% of common crane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Significance:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has become the fourth wetland of Gujarat to get the Ramsar tag. Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Thol Wildlife Sanctuary and Wadhwana wetland are the other Ramsar sites in the state.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is <\/b><b>Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Uttar Pradesh.It is a freshwater marsh and is the largest natural floodplain wetland of eastern Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freshwater marsh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a non-tidal, non-forested <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marsh\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marsh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wetland that contains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fresh water<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is continuously or frequently flooded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sanctuary was established in 1980 and is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act (1972).
