Why is e- waste generated and how different countries fare on the e-waste generation metric<\/span><\/b>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

When <\/span>obsolete devices are replaced by new devices due to the advent of new technologies, this, in turn, results in electronic waste.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

United States<\/span><\/b> and <\/span>China<\/span><\/b> are the first and second most electronic waste generating nations in the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India<\/span><\/b> is the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>fifth-largest electronic waste producer<\/span><\/b> in the world\u2019. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of e-waste is generated annually in India, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Majority of the e-waste ,about <\/span>70 percent comes from computer devices<\/span><\/b> and then comes the telecom sector which has 12 percent share.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Government, public sector companies and private sector companies, generate nearly 75% of electronic waste, with the contribution of individual households being only 16%.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

What are harmful effects of e-waste?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

E-waste can pose <\/span>several health hazards<\/span><\/b> which include damage of kidney, immune system, reproductive system and central nervous system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They can add <\/span>heavy metals in landfills<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

E-waste largely undergoes unorganised processing and recycling, which is not safe from the <\/span>environmental point of view.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Children and adults who often live work and play in or near e-waste recycling centres are especially vulnerable to the effects of e-waste\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Electronics waste contains hazardous but also simultaneously <\/span>valuable and scarce materials<\/span><\/b> which should be <\/span>extracted<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Segregation of e-waste<\/span><\/b> from normal waste and estimation of the amount of e-waste generated are the first few steps which will help in proper processing and disposal of e-waste.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is need for <\/span>enhanced awareness among every individual<\/span><\/b> about the cause and effects of e-waste and request cooperation in the disposal of the same. Users may be encouraged to practice digital fasting or e-fasting. This involves reducing technology use \u2014 such as turning off notifications,\u00a0turning phone off while working and setting limits for the amount of time spent on technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Manufacturers<\/span><\/b> should be encouraged to produce <\/span>greener electronics.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
