A study conducted by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune and some universities has found it to be <\/span>a net carbon emitter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How was the study conducted?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Sensors<\/span><\/b> and instruments were installed to monitor <\/span>carbon dioxide levels, water vapour concentrations, wind speeds and directions<\/span><\/b>. This was done under the MetFlux India project<\/strong> sponsored by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the information from various sensors was analysed using a technique called <\/span>Eddy Covariance Measurement<\/span><\/b> to see that how much carbon dioxide the trees in the forest were able to absorb or release during various seasons of the year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why this phenomenon is different from usual?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Forests usually <\/span>absorb more carbon <\/span><\/b>(through photosynthesis) than they release, which makes them <\/span>carbon sinks,<\/span><\/b> and they are globally promoted to counter the carbon dioxide emissions from different human activities.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A similar analysis of the teak forests in <\/span>Madhya Pradesh<\/span><\/b> by showed that the forest acted as a <\/span>carbon sink<\/span><\/b>, showing the uniqueness of the Kaziranga National Park ecosystem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is Kaziranga a net carbon emitter?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Kaziranga National park is a <\/span>deciduous forest<\/span><\/b> situated in <\/span>Assam<\/span><\/b> and home to the largest-population of\u00a0the <\/span>one- horned rhinoceros<\/span><\/b> in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest factor that makes Kaziranga national park a net emitter is its <\/span>unique soil<\/span><\/b>. The soil is home to a large population of <\/span>bacteria that release carbon dioxide as they breathe<\/span><\/b>, which adds to the carbon dioxide being emanated by other organisms, including trees.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>photosynthetic activity of trees during the monsoon decreases<\/span><\/b> due to increased cloud cover. Hence, the ability of the forest to absorb carbon dioxide also decreases. The situation remains the same during the post-monsoon and winter months, making the forest a net carbon emitter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why global warming would further reduce the capacity of the forests in the region to absorb carbon?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

At many places in North East India, trees release <\/span>a large number of heavier isotopes<\/span><\/b> in the water through a process known as <\/span>transpiration<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Note<\/strong> – Isotopes of an element have the same atomic number but different atomic mass.\u00a0<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The scientists analysed the isotopes in the transpired water and observed a <\/span>strong link between the water and carbon cycles of the forest<\/span><\/b> and that the transpired water is one of the <\/span>causal factors for rainfall locally.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They also witnessed a <\/span>decreasing trend in the rainfall coming from the transpired water<\/span><\/b> in the pre-monsoon months, which are responsible for the highest carbon absorption. This will be a major issue as the planet warms further and rainfall becomes more erratic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
