India is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ranked 151 out of 156 countries<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in terms of <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">economic participation and opportunity<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. This shows the existence of constraints (Glass ceiling) for the growth of women in economic sphere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The corporate sector in India is inflicted by same disparities. An IIMA study on gender balance in top organisations has found that:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"12\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Unequal pay<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: The average compensation paid to senior women executives was on an average ~15% lower than that paid to men.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"12\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Increase in pay gap<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: The pay gap widened as women advanced in their careers. The gap increased from 2.2% at the beginner level to &gt;6% at the senior management level.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"12\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gap in representation<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: The proportion of Women in Top Management is only 5% and in the board of directors is 16%.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This confirms the existence of glass ceiling in the corporate sector.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, the whole economy suffers from this issue. The Women&#8217;s LFPR in the latest PLFS before the pandemic (2018-19) was just <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">18.6%<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> compared to 55.6% for men. This low participation along with pay gap and lack of representation in top position have several implications.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"13\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Economic implications<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: The gender gap in employment results in weaker economic condition of women, which leads to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">feministaion of poverty<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and also lower economic output for the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"13\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Social implications<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: Lack of economic opportunity affects their ability to take independent financial decisions and results in lower social standing. This strengthens patriarchal setup of society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"13\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Promotes Gender inequality in society<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: The inequality in economic sphere spills over to other sphere like political and cultural, which undermines the efforts to reduce inequality in those spheres.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"14\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Other related implication:<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"14\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">It may lead to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">reduced opportunity for education and development<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"14\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Social evils like <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">female infanticide, child marriage<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> etc. are promoted.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"14\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Makes women <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">vulnerable to crimes<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> like trafficking, prostitution etc.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"14\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lack of economic resources lead to lower access to nutrition and healthcare.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To address the gender gap in employment following step can be taken<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"10\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Steps by the Government:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">The government should focus on <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">effective implementation of scheme<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> like <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Beti Bachao Beti Padhao<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, that ensure empowerment of women.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">Making women <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">empowered in political sphere<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with reservation to state assembly and Parliament. It will spill over to the economic sphere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Improving the gender balance<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in government owned entities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">In corporate sector<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The first step towards gender balance is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">recruiting in a gender-neutral manner on the basis of merit<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Companies can come out with clear recruitment policies in this regard.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Assigning cross-functional roles to women to remove stereo-types about gender roles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"9\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Corporate should create <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">diversity action plans that should include diversity councils, diversity cultural training, increased women intake, family friendly policies like increased maternity and paternity leave, child care facilities and allowance, spouse job considerations for transfer and mentorship and support from the organisation<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Women constitute about 50% of our population, their economic empowerment through better participation in the economic sphere is not just in the welfare of women but also the welfare of the country as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction: Introduce by giving some data on gender inequality in India.
