What has been the pandemic\u2019s effect on the job market in India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The unemployment issue in India date back to even before the pandemic began, but the pandemic has definitely made the situation worse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India has witnessed a <\/span>decline in the labour force participation rate<\/span><\/b>. This implies that many have simply opted out of the labour force, perhaps due to absence of jobs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unemployment rates<\/span><\/b> are significantly <\/span>higher among the youth<\/span><\/b>, and the more educated sections<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There has been <\/span>formalization of labour, but<\/span><\/b> there are two problems with this. <\/span><\/p>\n

– First<\/strong><\/em> is that this employment is more likely to be <\/span>concentrated among low-income jobs in the larger industrial regions.<\/p>\n

– Second<\/em><\/strong>, there is also the casualisation of employment to contend with. Casual wage labour employment lacks the social security framework that formal employment provides.<\/p>\n

The p<\/strong><\/span>er capita income levels are very low<\/span><\/b> currently, so many people are simply forced to opt for less productive jobs at lower wages. So a decline in unemployment rate may not be an accurate gauge of labour market distress<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heightened demand for work under MGNREGA<\/span><\/b>, despite large parts of the economy having recovered to their pre-pandemic levels,<\/span> is also a sign of economic distress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the main issues concerning the Indian labour market?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

There is a <\/span>lack of<\/span><\/b> adequate and remunerative employment<\/span><\/b> generation in the country .<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– This is highlighted by the incidents like recent protests in North India by those who had appeared for the non-technical popular categories exam and the demands by various caste groups for increasing reservation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There has also been <\/span>a lack of a labour-intensive manufacturing sector<\/span><\/b> that can absorb the surplus labour force in agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n
