The Indian agriculture sector is vulnerable to climate change and it will directly impact the daily lives of farmers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The need of Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) to make Indian agriculture sustainable.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Helvetica\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Enhanced resilience: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indian agriculture is highly dependent on Monsoon and prone to drought and other climate related shocks. Climate change is expected to reduce farm productivity. CSA will <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">reduce vulnerability to drought, pests, diseases and other climate-related risks and shocks<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">; and improve capacity to adapt and grow in the face of longer-term stresses like shortened seasons and erratic weather patterns.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Helvetica\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nutrition security and Farm income: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">India has a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">growing population<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> which requires increased agricultural productivity to fulfill the demands of nutrition for the population. CSA will help produce more and better food to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">improve nutrition security and boost incomes<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Helvetica\" data-listid=\"7\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Reduce emissions: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">As per the national GHG inventory, the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">agriculture sector emits 408 MMT of carbon-dioxide equivalen<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. For example, emission of 5.65 kg carbon dioxide equivalent of GHG per kg of rice.\u00a0<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">CSA will help pursue lower emissions for each kilo of food produced, avoid deforestation from agriculture and identify ways to absorb carbon out of the atmosphere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Helvetica\" data-listid=\"6\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Improving sustainability:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Agriculture practices in many parts of India have become unsustainable due to over-use of fertilizers, over-exploitation of water etc. This has reduced fertility of soils and groundwater level. CSA will make agriculture sustainable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The uptake of Climate Smart Agriculture is need of the hour to ensure sustainability of Indian agriculture. This calls for<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> revisiting policies to subsidize power and fertilizers, MSP<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and procurement and reorient them towards making the agriculture Climate smart. Methods like <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zero Budget Natural Farming <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">and<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Integrated Farming system<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> could also be utilized.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction: Explain Climate Smart Agriculture.
