The cases have been linked to travel to west African countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Lassa Fever?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lassa fever-causing virus <\/span><b>is found in West Africa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was first discovered in 1969 in Lassa, Nigeria. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lassa virus is named<\/span><b> after a town in Nigeria <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the first cases were discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The virus spreads by rats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Human Transmission:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 A person can become infected if they come in contact with household items or food that is contaminated with the urine or faeces of an infected rat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 It can also be spread if a person comes in contact with a sick person\u2019s infected bodily fluids or through mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose or mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Person-to-person transmission is more common in healthcare settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Symptoms typically appear 1-3 weeks after exposure. Mild symptoms include slight fever, fatigue, weakness and headache and more serious symptoms include bleeding, difficulty breathing, vomiting, facial swelling, pain in the chest, back and abdomen and shock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Deaths: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The death rate associated with this disease is low, at around 1%.
