News: <\/span><\/b>Government has given approval for the appointment of the Country\u2019s first National Maritime Security Coordinator (NMSC). The responsibility of the NMSC will be to <\/span>ensure effective coordination among multiple agencies<\/span><\/b> dealing with <\/span>threats from the high seas<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When was the idea for the post of NMSC proposed?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The establishment of a post of NMSC under the National security advisor was proposed <\/span>after the 26\/11 Mumbai terror attack.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back then the defense ministry had proposed the creation of a maritime security advisory board and the appointment of a maritime security adviser. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the significance of NMSC\u2019s appointment?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

The appointment comes at a critical point in India\u2019s strategic security environment –<\/p>\n

India has a <\/span>7,516-km coastline<\/span><\/b> and 2 million sq km of Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), a single-point coordinator like the NMSC for all aspects of maritime security was much needed.<\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It also faces a threat from the China-Pakistan axis, for this India not only needs to guard itself against <\/span>sea-borne non-state actors<\/span><\/b>\u00a0but also keep an eye on <\/span>Chinese threats<\/span><\/b> emanating from the Indian Ocean Region. China today has the largest navy and a maritime militia force to carry out grey-zone tactics against adversaries. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Global axis of power is shifting from the West to the East<\/span><\/b> so the sea lanes around India are going to get busier. Countries have <\/span>different interpretations of UNCLOS<\/span><\/b> which may create situations like last year\u2019s American freedom of navigation operation in India\u2019s EEZ.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, <\/span>90% of India\u2019s trade<\/span><\/b> by volume transits <\/span>through the seas<\/span><\/b>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, there is a need for enhanced maritime domain awareness to <\/span>protect both security and economic interests.<\/span><\/b> The NMSC will help lay the blueprint for a truly modern maritime security system.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
